  13.     The NSF Network Service Center (NNSC), a project of the Laboratories
  14. business unit of the Systems and Technologies Division, has developed a
  15. Tour of the Internet in HyperCard (TM) format for novice network users.
  16. The stack has basic information including history, sample email, ftp,
  17. and telnet sessions, and a glossary.  The Tour is intended to be a fun
  18. and easy way to learn about the Internet.

  20.     We have included a 'Local Info' section as part of the Tour.  This
  21. section is a place where an organization can add information relevant to
  22. its own group of users, for example a listing of resources at that site,
  23. or other, specialized information.

  25.     MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN Internet-Tour.sit.hqx and
  26.     Internet-Tour4.0.2.sit.hqx:  
  27.  
  28.             Your Internet Tour is Version 4.0.2 if, and only if,
  29.     'Version 4.0.2' appears on the first screen of the Tour.
  30.     If you do not want to open the Tour, choose the 'Get
  31.     Info' command on the 'File' menu, with the 'Internet Tour
  32.     4.0.2' file selected.

  34.             1) Version 4.0.2 makes some technical changes in the
  35.         menu bar works during the Quick Tour, which most people
  36.     won't notice.
  37.  
  38.             2) For those who take advantage of the 'Local Info'
  39.     section: Version 4.0.2 allows you to change the name of
  40.     the main stack.
  41.  
  42.     This README document contains, first, instructions for installing
  43. the Internet Tour, and then (for those who need them), nitty-gritty
  44. details about FTP.

  49.     The Internet Tour is a HyperCard (TM) 2 stack for Macintosh computers.
  50.  
  51.     In order to run this stack, you need to have HyperCard 2.  HyperCard
  52. 2 requires Macintosh system 6.0.5 or higher.  In order for all the text
  53. to display properly, you should have the following screen fonts in your
  54. system
  55.  
  56.      Palatino 18, 14, 12, and 10 
  57.  
  58.      Helvetica 14 and 12 
  59.  
  60.      Courier 12
  61.  
  62.     The Palatino fonts are in the 'HyperCard Fonts' suitcase that comes
  63. with HyperCard;  the Helvetica and Courier fonts are included with
  64. Macintosh system software.
  65.  
  66.     The Internet Tour files have been compressed and saved as a StuffIt
  67. 1.5.1 archive, and converted to binhex format.  In order to use the
  68. files, you need to reverse the process.  To do this, you need the
  69. Macintosh application StuffIt 1.5.1 or StuffIt Classic.  The files take
  70. up about 760k when converted to their original format.  (You'll need at
  71. least twice that much space to do the conversion.)

  73.     Your have two methods of transferring the Internet Tour over the
  74. Internet from the NNSC to your host computer: 
  75.  
  76.     1)  If you have access to a computer that is on the Internet and
  77.     runs the 'ftp' facility, you can 'ftp' Internet-Tour.sit.hqx
  78.     using a text option; then transfer it to your Mac.
  79.  
  80.     2)  If you have access to a computer that can exchange email with
  81.     the Internet, you can send a message to the Info-Server on
  82.     nnsc.nsf.net.  You will receive the file split into messages small
  83.     enough to pass through most gateways to the Internet.  Use an
  84.         editor to reassemble the original file and transfer it to your
  85.     Mac.  Both methods are described below, in detail.

  87.     Use StuffIt's 'Decode binhex file' option (on the Other menu).  This
  88. creates a new file in addition to the original one:  Internet-Tour.sit.
  89. Next choose 'Open archive' from StuffIt's File menu.  Open
  90. Internet-Tour.sit, and click the 'Extract' button at the bottom.  This
  91. will create three files:  Internet Tour, Internet Local Info, and
  92. Internet Tour doc.

  102. HOW TO USE THE FTP COMMAND
  103.  
  104.     You can FTP the internet-tour files from nnsc.nsf.net with a
  105. standard anonymous FTP connection:
  106.  
  107.         ftp nnsc.nsf.net
  108.  
  109.     (If you are using the Unix operating system, the command 'ftp' must
  110. be typed in lowercase letters.  On other operating systems, it may be
  111. either uppercase or lowercase.)
  112.  
  113.     You will see a 'banner' and be prompted for your login:
  114.  
  115.         Connected to nnsc.nsf.net.
  116.         220 nnsc.nsf.net FTP server (Version 5.59 Mon May 14 13:48:21 EDT

  120.     You should type 'anonymous', and then use the password 'guest'.  The
  121. password will not be displayed on your terminal.

  129.     To see the FTP commands that are available to you, type ?  at the
  130. 'ftp>' prompt.

  132.     NOTE: Different operating systems have FTP commands with different
  133.     banners and commands.  Your FTP implementation may not look exactly
  134.     like the one shown here, but it should have the same general
  135.     functionality.

  137.     1)  Type the 'status' command to check your file type.

  148.         The ASCII setting is the same as TEXT.  This is the default.

  160.         give the 'dir' command (usually equivalent to the 'ls' command on
  161.     Unix systems).

  170.         NOTE: You must type the file names exactly as shown.  Unix filenames
  171.         are case- sensitive (i.e., it makes a difference whether the letters 
  172.         are lowercase or capitals).

  182. HOW TO ORDER THE INTERNET TOUR FROM THE NNSC INFO-SERVER

  184.     1)  Send a message to 'INFO-SERVER@nnsc.nsf.net'. You do not need a
  185.     subject field. The text of your message must be in a special
  186.     format (this is very important), but it does not matter whether
  187.     the letters are uppercase or lowercase.

  189.     REQUEST: internet-tour          Note: The 'Request:' was 
  190.     topic: INTERNET-TOUR            changed in Feb 1992.

  194.     'Request: nsfnet' tells the Info-Server to look for the topics
  195.         in the INTERNET-TOUR section of the Info-Server. 'Topic:
  196.     internet-tour' orders BOTH of the files about the tour,
  197.     'Internet-Tour-README' and 'Internet-Tour4.0.2.sit.hqx'.
  198.     'Topic: help' orders a file with information about other
  199.     'Requests' and their 'Topics' in the NNSC Info-Server.
